Rotations

Opportunities beyond the Classroom
Experience all the genetic counseling profession has to offer

Clinical training is a critical component of the GC Program curriculum. Our clinical rotations are integrated with the didactic curriculum to provide a graduated sequence of experiences designed to develop independent clinicians that provide high quality care while also exposing students to the expanded practice of genetic counseling.

Training opportunities exist in a wide variety of settings including patient care clinics, clinical laboratories and private industry. The San Francisco Bay Area’s rich ethnocultural and socioeconomic diversity is reflected in the patients UCSF serves and allows students to develop strong cultural competencies. Opportunities abound for students to develop expertise utilizing medical interpreters, or use their own multilingual skills; and to advocate for the economically disadvantaged and medically vulnerable. The program’s close proximity to Silicon Valley and a high concentration of biotechnology companies allows for students to train in some of the nation’s most recognized private industry organizations. Our goal is to match students with training experiences that align with their future professional interests.

The number of clinical encounters in our clinical training curriculum will exceed the minimum requirements set by ACGC (Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling) for participatory cases.
